Aboriginal Education Programs

Aboriginal Education

Sydney Secondary College is proudly located on the lands of the Gadigal and Wongal people of the Eora nation. We acknowledge and extend our respect to Elders past, present and emerging, and to all who have, and continue to contribute to our College.

As a College we are committed to improving the educational outcomes and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students so that they excel and achieve in every aspect of their education. We are committed to increasing knowledge and understanding of the histories, cultures and experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the First Peoples of Australia across our curriculum as we believe this knowledge empowers all students.

We have strong community connections with our Inner City Local Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG) and work with a number of community stakeholders such as local Elders, Department of Education's Regional Aboriginal Education Team, the Royal Botanic Gardens and surrounding Universities to ensure that our outcomes are met. We also engage in a number of programs that allow our students to build their capacity and thrive.

Acknowledging Country

STEM X Horizons sees SSC Leichhardt and Balmain partner with the University of Technology to engage in an authentic Project Based Learning experience to inspire young ABoriginal and Torres Strait Islanders students to view engineering as a socio-technical discipline where it is possible to create positive impact.

Art Gallery of NSW has partnered with SSC Balmain and Leichhardt to deliver a creative program for our Bro Speak/Sista Speak sessions.

Workshops allow students to experiment with a range of materials, drawing inspiration from the art practices of Grace Lillian Lee, to create their own pieces.

Later in the year students will engage in digital workshops based on the collection Aurukun camp dogs (Ku'). Students will 'instal' their digital work around the gallery to showcase their creative talents.
